Internet Services In Xinjiang Now Back To Normal

The press office of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has announced that based on the current stable situation of the region, the need for social economic development, and the demands of local people, Xinjiang has decided to fully restore Internet services from May 14, 2010, with the approval of the government.

After the July 5, 2009, riots in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s government implemented partial control over communications in this area. Not only did this impact users in Xinjiang, it also greatly impacted businesses, as companies and hotels also had no access to Internet services.

The region previously reopened the access to several websites at the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. With the improvement of the situation, the government finally decided to lift the ban on Internet services completely.

At the same time, the press office stated that the Internet is also a space governed by law and anyone who spreads harmful information via the Internet should be punished. Therefore, the region has opened hotlines and email for people to report harmful Internet information and it called for the joint supervision of netizens to create a harmonious Internet environment.
