Jadhav, 49, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by the Pakistani military court on charges of “espionage and terrorism” after a closed trial in April 2017. His sentencing evoked a sharp reaction in India. A 16-member bench led by President of the Court Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf by 15-1 votes ordered an “effective review and reconsideration of the conviction and sentence of the Indian national.
The bench ruled by 15 votes to 1 that Pakistan “deprived the Republic of India of the right to communicate with and have access to Mr Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav, to visit him in detention and to arrange for his legal representation.” Soon after the judgement was pronounced by the World Court, social media was taken by storm and thousands of people not just in India but abroad hailed the decision and prayed for Jadhav’s safety and earliest return.
Hashtags including #KulbhushanJadhav, #KulbhushanKeSathDesh, #JusticeForKulbhushan, #InternationalCourtOfJustice started trending on micro-blogging site. Here’s how twitterratti bombarded with posts tearing apart Pakistani nationals who were not so happy with the verdict:

That said, while both sides can declare victory, in the end this is a major triumph for #India, given the centrality of the consular access issue in India’s claim that it brought to the ICJ. Also, ruling that the death sentence should remain suspended is huge. #KulbhushanJadhav
