Attack on green activist sparks Twitter war between MK Stalin, BJP leader – India Today

DMK president MK Stalin and BJP state chief Tamilisai Soundarrajan locked horns on Twitter after the attack on environmental activist Piyush Manush on Wednesday.

MK Stalin took to Twitter and wrote, “The way to look at what happened to Piyush Manush is a stark reminder that terrible things that happened to Gauri Lankesh can also happen to activists in TN. Let us condemn these acts that strangle democracy.”

Retweeting the tweet, Tamilisai Soundarrajan questioned him on whether the DMK would allow the same to happen in their party headquarters. “Does democracy mean one can enter a party office and create ruckus? Let us identify urban Naxals who are in [the] garb of social activists. Will DMK permit this at Arivalayam?”.

On Wednesday evening around 5:30 pm, activist and environmentalist Piyush Manush streamed a Facebook live video showing him enter the BJP office. He was then heckled, attacked and garlanded with slippers by party workers.

The incident has sparked massive outrage in the state with several leaders including DMK chief MK Stalin and AMMK deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran coming out in support of Piyush Manush.

The activist was seen entering the BJP office at Maravaneri and having a heated debate on the economic slowdown, Article 370 and reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. The activist even accused BJP cadres of cyberbullying.

As the argument heated up, Piyush Manush was manhandled, beaten and garlanded with slippers. The police were called to escort him out. BJP district president RP Gopinath lodged a complaint stating that Manush trespassed into the party office with the intention to malign the party and the Union government.

BJP state president Tamilisai Soundarrajan issued a statement seeking police action against Piyush Manush for creating law and order problems at the BJP office and attacking cadres.

The activist has also filed a police complaint against the BJP district president and cadres for attacking him and stealing his mobile phone.
