TRICHY: A 30-year-old man in a village in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday married a Filipino woman whom he befriended on Facebook.
While working in Singapore as an electrician in 2014, Velmurugan Somasundaram, 30, of Annankaranpettai near Jayamkondam developed a virtual relationship with the Philippines national, Rona Jane, on the social media site. Jane, 25, hails from Davao City in the Philippines.
After three years of virtual interactions, Jane visited Velmurugan in Singapore where the couple expressed their wish to tie the knot following which the couple obtained the permissions of their parents for the wedding.
After convincing his family members, Velmurugan arranged the wedding near Jayamkondam on September 1.
“Language was not a barrier for us. We planned to marry only after obtaining the approval of our parents,” Velmurugan said.
The wedding was conducted as per the Hindu custom involving the bridegroom tying the mangalsutra around the neck of the bride while the seniors in the family and friends showering atchathai (rice covered with turmeric paste).
Jane’s parents watched the wedding through a video call.
