A war of words broke out between Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Twitter over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in Assam.
In a series of tweets, Owaisi said India can never be a “Hindu rashtra”, adding that the Constitution of our country treats all faiths, races and castes equally. Owaisi also went on to say that religion can never be considered as a factor for granting citizenship.
“Constitution says Bharat will treat all faiths, races & castes equally. This isn’t Hindu Rashtra, it never will be inshallah,” Owaisi tweeted.
“We’re a country that has welcomed many persecuted communities (Hindus & non-Hindus), they’re refugees not potential citizens. Religion can NEVER be the basis of citizenship. Our forefathers rejected it when they drafted the Constitution & Godse’s aulaad cannot undo it so easily,” Owaisi posted on Twitter.

Owaisi criticised the NRC process in Assam and said it is being used to “exclude Muslims”. Owaisi claimed that Himanta Biswa Sarma, BJP’s face in the Northeast, said that “Hindus will be protected by hook or crook”. By saying this, Owaisi said Himanta Biswa Sarma has thus “admitted” that the NRC process in Assam is just a way to exclude the Muslims in the country.
“This is an open admission of how #NRCassam was being used to exclude Muslims. After putting undocumented people through such an arduous process, @himantabiswa says that, by hook or crook, Hindus will be protected. Citizenship CANNOT be given or withdrawn on the basis of faith,” Owaisi said.

On August 31, the Assam government released the final list of the NRC in which more than 19 lakh people were left out. Of the 3.29 crore people who applied for NRC, the citizenship list, a total of 3.11 crore have made it to the final NRC list.
Himanta Biswa Sarma hit back at Owaisi’s claim and asked Owaisi who will protect the the Hindus in the country if India does not protect them.
“If India does not protect Hindus who will protect them? Pakistan? India shall forever remain a home for persecuted Hindus, irrespective of your opposition Sir,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

In a sharp retort to Owaisi’s “Hindu rashtra” remark, Himanta Biswa Sarma said India has been the “homeland for more than 5,000 years” for the Hindus.
“Sir, India is a civilisation not [a] country. History of a country starts with Constitution. But history of a civilisation starts with much more. India that is Bharat was, is and will remain a vibrant civilisation. For Hindus, India has been our homeland for more than 5,000 years!,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
