US Lawmakers Call on Twitter to Bar Chinese Communist Party Accounts Over Virus Disinformation

Two Republican lawmakers are urging Twitter to ban Chinese Communist officials from its platform in response to the regime’s aggressive propaganda campaign to “whitewash” its coverup of the outbreak.
“While the coronavirus pandemic is afflicting families, governments, and markets around the world, the Chinese Communist Party is waging a massive propaganda campaign to rewrite the history of COVID-19 and whitewash the Party’s lies,” wrote Sen. Ben Sasse (R- Neb.) and Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) in a March 20 letter to Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey.
Twitter is censored in China, but dozens of Chinese diplomats, embassies, and consulates are active on the platform, pushing state-sanctioned narratives about the outbreak.
For instance, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian recently promoted the conspiracy that the virus came from the U.S. Army, echoing the regime’s suggestion that the outbreak did not originate in China. Following the tweet, the U.S. State Department summoned the Chinese ambassador to the United States, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called a top Chinese diplomat to condemn state-led “outlandish rumors.”
“By banning Twitter in China, the Chinese Communist Party is keeping its citizens in the dark. By putting propaganda on Twitter, the Chinese Communist Party is lying to the rest of the world,” the lawmakers wrote.

Chinese and Italian police officers held a ceremony here Tuesday to launch the fourth joint police patrol between the two nations.
Many guests attended the event, including Chinese Ambassador to Italy Li Junhua, Director of Italy’s International Police Cooperation Service Giuseppe Spina, and Deputy Director-General for Public Security Vittorio Rizzi, according to the Rome municipality’s public information office.

Chinese police are joining Italian officers on the streets of Rome and Milan in an experiment aimed at helping tourists from China feel safe, Italy’s interior ministry has announced.
The experiment is the first of its kind in Europe, China’s ambassador to Italy, Li Ruiyu, said at a meeting to announce the project, according to a statement from the Italian ministry…
The four Chinese officers, who were trained by Italians in Beijing, will wear the same uniforms they wear at home so their compatriots can recognise them easily.
More than 3 million Chinese tourists come to Italy every year, according to Liao Jinrong, the director general of the Chinese international co-operation bureau.
