Among the pages and groups that had the most number of followers were the ones designed to gather support for a possible Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022. Along with this, there were several pages that were red-tagging activists and China’s stake in the West Philippine Sea.
As a response to the reports, Robredo couldn’t help but be concerned about the implications of foreign interference. According to a report from Inquirer, Robredo asked “Why is China meddling in our domestic affairs“?
Furthermore, she emphasized that the Filipino people should be “terrified of the implications”. Along with this, she asked, “Why are they interested in our elections? Is this … because interfering would protect their own interests?“
As per the report, the majority of the pages were linked to Fujian, a province on the southeastern coast of China. Additionally, the Fujian-backed network handles around 150 pages that were mostly linked to the promotion of Sarah Duterte’s potential 2022 candidacy.
