Creative pensioners stun Chinese social media with their incredible recreations of famous paintings

A group of elderly residents at a nursing home in Shanghai has amazed social media with their creativity after stunningly recreating famous works of art.

In a before-and-after style, the seniors are seen in viral footage doing their normal day-to-day activities before suddenly turning into renowned painting figures with a makeover.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese web users were impressed by the artistic pensioners who are smashing the stereotypes about the elderly.

The pensioners’ art project took the Chinese social media by storm after it was shared on Thursday by the Shanghai nursing home, Yangpu Welfare Institution.

One elderly resident is seen drying his head with a red towel before suddenly turning into the man wearing a chaperon in the ‘Portrait of a Man’, a masterpiece by Jan van Eyck.

Another senior recreated ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch as she put her hands on her cheeks, seemingly shocked, after she accidentally dropped a pair of chopsticks while eating.

Other famous works of art recreated by the pensioners including ‘Portrait of Dr Gachet’, ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and a self-portrait of Frida Kahlo.

The elderly people produced the hilarious yet imaginative recreations with the help of a professional crew and the nursing home, according to Chinese media.

Qiao Yihao, the director of the Shanghai home, told reporters: ‘Many of the elderly people at our facility are very expressive and creative, so we hoped to showcase their talent via short videos and challenge the stereotypes of the elderly in nursing homes.’

The viral footage stunned hundreds of thousands of Chinese netizens who were stunned by the seniors’ creativity.

One commenter wrote: ‘They are incredible! They have a fabulous elderly life.’

Another said: ‘They are so adorable. I hope I can live like them when I’m older.’
