New Delhi: Months-long protest and one tweet have left celebrities, Indians as well as international, divided. On Tuesday, international pop star Rihanna became the first global name to extend support to the ongoing farmers’ protest in India.

Thousands of farmers in India, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, have been protesting at several Delhi border points since November 2020, seeking repeal of the three farm laws and legal guarantee of minimum support price for their crops.

The 32-year-old singer shared a news article headlined, ‘India cuts internet around New Delhi as protesting farmers clash with police’, and tweeted: “Why aren’t we talking about this? #FarmersProtest”.

In not much time, the tweet by Rihanna, who has more than 100 million followers on Twitter, sparked reactions. At the time of writing, the post was retweeted by 226.3K users and liked by 490.3K users.

While some celebrities extended support to Rihanna, others asked her not to intervene in India’s internal matters. In fact, India’s Ministry of External Affairs, on Wednesday, reacted sharply to comments by foreign celebrities and others, saying a proper understanding of the matter is required before rushing to comment on the protests. “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” said the MEA in a statement.

Celebrities who supported Rihanna

Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh: “Jaat Di Kohr Kirli, Shateeriyan Nu Jaffe…,” Dosanjh shared a Punjabi proverb which means that your status in life is rather insignificant but you know how to talk big.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg: “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India,” the teen climate activist tweeted on Tuesday.

Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris: The American lawyer tweeted: “It’s no coincidence that the world’s oldest democracy was attacked not even a month ago, and as we speak, the most populous democracy is under assault. This is related. We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters.”

Lebanese-American former adult star Mia Khalifa: “What in the human rights violations is going on?! They cut the internet around New Delhi?! #FarmersProtest,” Mia tweeted on Wednesday. Read her another tweet:

Canadian YouTuber Lily Singh: “Yes! Thank you so much Rihanna. This is a humanity issue! #IStandWithFarmers and this narrative is TIRED,” comedian, talk show host, and actress Lily Singh tweeted.

Celebrities who differed

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut: The ‘Panga’ actor called Rihanna a “fool”. “No one is talking about it because they are not farmers they are terrorists who are trying to divide India, so that China can take over our vulnerable broken nation and make it a Chinese colony much like USA… Sit down you fool, we are not selling our nation like you dummies,” tweeted Kangana.

Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha: The former India cricketer on Wednesday said opinion of an outsider is not required on an internal matter. “My country is proud of our farmers and knows how important they are, I trust it will be addressed soon. We don’t need an outsider poking her nose in our internal matters,” said Ojha.
