Indian government will prioritise legislation to regulate social media

Predictions

  • Government will prioritise legislation to regulate social media following dispute with Twitter amid crackdown on farmers’ protests
  • International scrutiny of government’s curbs on activists and journalists will potentially increase reputational risks for social media firms
  • US criticism over crackdown and media restrictions will be muted given India’s importance as bulwark to China’s regional ambitions

Event

Local media reported on 12 February that Twitter had largely complied with government demands to remove the accounts of 1,435 users who had posted about the farmers’ protests taking place on the outskirts of Delhi.
