New Delhi: Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday asserted that both the Indian vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective. He further said that even if someone contracts the infection after inoculation, it minimises the chances of their hospitalisation.

During a press brief, Dr Harsh Vardhan claimed that after taking the first dose of the vaccine, none of the ministry officials felt any side effects. Both Indian vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – are safe and immunogenic, he added.

For the people who still have doubts regarding the vaccine, Vardhan urged them not to believe the information that is being circulated in WhatsApp university.

Talking about the infections that are being reported after COVID-19 vaccinations, the Health Minister said, “There are only a few rare cases wherein people contracted COVID-19 after taking vaccines. Even if someone tests positive after taking vaccines, it minimalises the chances of their hospitalisation or admission to ICU wards.”

The minister’s comments came shortly after he and his wife Nutan Goel took the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute.

He further advised people that even after the second dose, COVID appropriate behaviour should be followed for at least two weeks.

More than six crore doses have been administered to people so far in the country and the government is still giving adequate vaccines to the states.

Talking about the recent surge in COVID-19 infections, Dr Harsh Vardhan said people are getting complacent and super-spreader events are rampantly taking place across the country.

In the current scenario of increasing cases, he appealed to the people to follow COVID-19 protocols advised by the Centre and get vaccinated against the infection.
