BLACKPINK Lisa’s Pictorials Taken Down from Chinese Social Media

Recently, BLACKPINK’s Lisa was featured as the cover model for the April 2021 issue of Harper’s Bazaar China. Pictorials of Lisa for the magazine were released and shared on various social media sites.

The BLACKPINK member had been gaining immense popularity in China after featuring as a dance mentor for the Chinese survival show “Youth With You” in seasons two and three.

With Lisa’s growing popularity in the country, she was featured as the cover model for the April 2021 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine.

The release of the pictorials, that were both in black-and-white and colored, garnered heavy attraction for showcasing the dancer and rapper in sexy and chic outfit concepts. 

However, on April 1, several of Lisa’s pictorials from the magazine were taken down from Chinese social media sites.

In addition, Harper’s Bazaar China, who posted the pictorials, also took down the pictorials from their social media.

Fans of the popular Thai K-Pop idol became suspicious as to why her pictorials were removed, but majority of the fans speculated one reason: that BLACKPINK and Lisa are models for Adidas.

Why Lisa Modeling for Adidas Matters in China

Recently, China has sparked global concern after speculations that Xinjiang, where cotton is produced and harvested, is violating human rights against the Uygur minority in the Uygur Autonomous Region through exploitation and forced labor.

Since then, many global fashion brands such as H&M, Adidas, Nike and Burberry have begun to pull out from sourcing their cotton in Xinjiang and is boycotting China.

After the brands started boycotting China, many Chinese K-Pop idols have also ended their partnerships and deals with the global brands, such as GOT7 Jackson, f(x) Victoria, EXO Lay and more.

Currently, the BLACKPINK members are the brand models for Adidas, with their photos being on the cover of Adidas China’s official Weibo account and other Chinese social media.

Based on netizens speculations and comments, Harper’s Bazaar China took down Lisa’s pictorials as BLACKPINK remain as the models for Adidas after the brand refused to import cotton from Xinjiang and given the current circumstances in China.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time the BLACKPINK members have been criticized by Chinese netizens.

In November 2020, fellow group member Jennie was criticized by Chinese netizens and media for holding a panda, which is regarded as China’s national treasure, without wearing gloves in a reality show.

Eventually, the video of Jennie and the panda was deleted from various platforms.
