Survey agencies have been continuously warning telecom regulators and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the issue of fake social media accounts and fake news in India. Meanwhile, a report in the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’ has revealed that sometime back Facebook had prepared a plan to remove fake accounts in India. But during this time the company took the step back after the name of a BJP MP.
The report said that Facebook had already told Facebook employees about fake profiles and users a long time ago. But the company reportedly allowed the BJP MP’s popularity to grow through fake accounts. It is not clear who the BJP leader was yet, but speculation is rife that he is among the top leaders.
The newspaper made the claims based on internal documents, statements by a former Facebook employee (now a whistleblower), and notes prepared by the company regarding the removal of the fake account.
Facebook took action against India’s opposition leaders: While Facebook did not take action in the matter after the BJP MP was named, the opposition groups of the Congress, which increased the popularity of members, were immediately removed. According to The Guardian, the network of such fake accounts was first disclosed by Facebook’s data scientist Sophie Zhang. She has been continuously revealing irregularities in Facebook for the past few months. However, Facebook has categorically denied any allegations of discrimination in deleting accounts.
According to the report, Zhang informed the top leadership of Facebook about these fake networks. Two of these networks were connected to the BJP and two to Congress. Investigation revealed that many accounts are fake. After this, it was recommended to lock these accounts and there was also talk of restarting the accounts in order to provide proper proof when the accounts were genuine.
After this, a Facebook employee locked more than 500 accounts of the first three networks, but when they were preparing to close about 50 accounts of the fourth network, then due to one account, they stopped work and up Asked for advice from the people of. He wrote a mail to the task management system of Facebook and asked whether action can be taken on the accounts of government partners and high-priority Indians. However, Facebook’s top leadership did not respond to this.
Facebook did not respond to account blocking: It is reported that Zhang himself wrote a letter in February 2020 demanding that we should proceed with the closure of these accounts to avoid any kind of bias. Zhang was convinced that the high-priority account belonged to the BJP MP and his name in the network of such fake accounts was proof that someone else was running 50 fake accounts from his Facebook. However, he was not responded to on behalf of Facebook officials after mailing in August as well.
