Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli is a character, there’s no denying that. Kohli wears his heart on his sleeve and rarely misses out on an opportunity to showcase his passion. As India humbled England in the Oval Test, Kohli reportedly tried to troll the Barmy Army but his act has left Twitter divided.

Seeing Kohli celebrate England’s downfall by targeting the Barmy Army, a number of English journalists fans and even pundits took to Twitter labelling the act ‘classless’. There were those too who defended the India skipper’s act amid criticism.

“Love this. His teammates are celebrating a wicket, but Kohli finds the time to taunt the England fans. Doesn’t miss a trick!”, England’s Daily Mail cricket journalist Lawrence Booth tweeted in sarcasm.

“To clear up any confusion, I don’t really love this,” he further explained. “I find it weird when a top-class sportsman isn’t content with winning a game, having totally outplayed the opposition, but wants to stick it to the fans too.”

Nick Compton, who has been a staunch critic of Kohli throughout the series, also tweeted. “It doesn’t look good for him! No need.”

Even Barmy Army took to Twitter and posted a picture of Kohli doing the trumpet gesture, saying: “Yes we know you want to be in the army Virat. We get the hint”.

However, there were those too who supported Kohli over his act.

England were given a target of 368 runs to chase, with a little more than one day left in the game. While English openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns put in a 100-run stand for the opening wicket, India made an excellent comeback in the game after the first session.

Jasprit Bumrah triggered the England collapse as the hosts went from 100 for 0 to 210 all-out, hence losing the match by 157 runs. Kohli specifically hailed the Indian team’s character following the win as the tourists claimed a 2-1 unassailable lead in the series.
