Tripura violence: Police identifies social media conspiracy posts originating outside India-Business Journal

Tripura police has identified 128 objectionable posts in social media out of which at least 14 links which have originated from outside India revealing the conspiracy hatched outside India as well for promoting hatred between religious groups and creating disturbances.

FIR is filed against two female journalists in Tripura for doing ground reporting on the alleged mosque vandalism.

Tripura police in a statement in the aftermath of vandalism in Durga puia Pandals and temples in Bangladesh, there were agitations in some areas of the State Of Tripura, During October 20 to 27 last there were allegations of some incidents of mischief/damage to Mosque, prayer hall and 3/4 private properties which are under investigation. The situation was promptly brought under control by timely action by Tripura Police and security forces. The proactive action of police had quickly brought the situation under control and there was no casualty of human lives or injuries to any person. As of now the situation is normal.

The police added that after these incidents there were visits by several Muslims religious groups/bodies/persons from outside the State to the affected areas and these were simultaneously followed by a systematic media propaganda by sharing distorted information, photographs, videos in the social media. Accordingly, police identified some of the social media links and suspected persons/bodies and initiated legal action. In all, 20 cases have been registered in connection with incidents including 10 suo-moto cases. Out of these 10 cases, 6 cases relate to spreading of malicious propaganda, distorted news for creating hatred between religious communities. 24 persons have been arrested in these cases and notices have been served against 140 persons/bodies and about 124 witnesses have been examined. Investigation of all the cases is in progress.

The police said, “So far 128 social media posts have been identified comprising 94 twitter posts, 32 facebook posts and 2 YouTube postswhich were spreading malicious propaganda for creating hatred between religious communities. Some of those social media postshave used fake-photographs, distorted news contents and other statements to create a sense of distrust among communities in Tripura and maligning the reputation of peace loving inhabitants of Tripura. So far 39 social media posts with fake photographs and 4 distorted news contents have been identified and some posts have suspected objectionable contents. Accordingly, for all these post notices have been served for removing the posts to concern social media platforms. Till now 47 twitter post and one YouTube post has been removed. Legal steps have been taken for removal of the remaining post”.

The police further stated there is at least one post initiated by IAM Council against which information has been received about its link with Jel network of Pakistan and supporting Taliban and lobbying with foreign organisations against India in connivance with ISI, it is under further investigation. There are at least 14 links which have originated from outside India revealing the conspiracy hatched outside India as well for promoting hatred between religious groups and creating disturbances.

“Around 7 notices have been served U/S41 A CrPC. This includes notices served to 4 lawyers reportedly practicing in the Supreme Court, one report submitted by the group under the banner of Lawyers for Democracy has been seized in connection with a case. In this report there is a design to draw out of proportion the alleged attack upon the muslim religious places in Tripura and in the background note they tried to mislead by stating that Tripura was without any rule after its merger in 1949 till July 1963 and it amounts to disrupt the sovereignty and territorial integrity Of India.”

The police added that it is reiterated that there is no reported Case of damage Of structure Of any Masjid in Tripura in the recent Communal incidents. However, there have been few attempts of mischief by fire upon some Masjids in the State which were foiled by the timely action of Police and Peace loving people. There are some instances of theft and damage by mischief of properties like Microphone, Ceiling Fan, Mattresses and wooden cots during these incidents. In One incident under Kakrabon PS Gomati District, one Prayer Hall located in the house complex of one Rahamat Ali was however burnt down.
