The Ministry of Information and Technology (MeitY) has taken action against several accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Telegram for circulating morphed videos of a cabinet briefing and promoting explicit or hateful content.
MeitY said it had received several complaints alleging how certain handles, accounts and channels were indulging in explicit content and trying to create disharmony among communities.
Moreover, several videos have been circulating on social media, including the most recent morphed videos which allegedly showed a cabinet briefing with superimposed audio.
Action has been taken against 73 Twitter handles which have been suspended, four YouTube vidoes which have been removed, and one Instagram game which has also been brought down, MoS for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in a tweet.
The owners of these accounts are being identified and will be prosecuted under law and these social media platforms will be reviewed on their due diligence, he added.

The ministry has reached out to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Telegram, asking them to ensure that action is taken against such accounts with immediate effect.
