New Delhi: Twitter announced on Wednesday that it is working to allow users to edit their tweets after posting to correct typos and errors as CEO Parag Agrawal welcomed Tesla and SpaceX CEO to its board of directors.

The microblogging platform said Twitter plans to test the feature with Twitter Blue subscribers in the coming months. (Also read: Apple to host online developer flagship conference June 6-10)

“Now that everyone’s asking…yeah, we’ve been working on an editing feature since last year!” the company said.

“We didn’t get the idea from a poll (by Elon Musk). We’ll begin testing within @TwitterBlue. Labs in the coming months to learn what works, what doesn’t, and what is possible,” Twitter wrote.

The news comes as Musk acquired a 9.2 percent stake for $3 billion in the company.

Jay Sullivan, the company’s VP of consumer products, said the edit button has been the most requested Twitter feature for years.

“People want to be able to fix (sometimes embarrassing) mistakes, typos and hot takes in the moment. Right now they’re working around this by deleting and retweeting,” Sullivan said Wednesday.

Without things like time limits, controls and transparency about what was edited, “Edit can be abused to change the record of the public conversation,” he noted.

“Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority as we approach this work.”

Therefore, it will take time and “we will be actively seeking input and hostile thinking ahead of Edit’s launch. We will approach this feature with care and thoughtfulness and we will share updates as we go,” he said in a tweet thread.

The former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has always been reluctant to add the edit button in the past.

Musk, who launched a poll this week asking his more than 80 million followers whether they want an edit button, has announced significant improvements to Twitter in the coming months.
