Fans were left furious last night (May 24) when Sam Smith suddenly cancelled their Manchester show four songs in – only days before they are due to perform at Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena. Thousands of fans were told to leave the AO Arena in Manchester on Wednesday night after the performance was cancelled.

The arena briefly went dark and the performance as part of their Gloria tour stopped, reports the Manchester Evening News. It was later confirmed that the show had been stopped due to ‘vocal issues’.

In a statement, Sam Smith explained that they had recently battled a virus and that there was ‘something wrong’ with their voice, adding they were ‘heartbroken’ at being unable to finish the show.

In a statement on their Instagram story, the singer said: “Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows. Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end.

“During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.

“I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won’t. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry x”

Sam Smith Concert at the AO Arena on Wednesday (April 24)

It comes only a month after Sam Smith cancelled their Resorts World Arena show on April 25 due to ill health. A rescheduled show was due to take place this Saturday, May 27 – but it has not yet been confirmed whether this will go ahead.

Fans have already taken to social media to query whether the Birmingham show will go ahead this weekend. Daisy said on Twitter: “Sam Smith whilst your health is important please don’t cancel Birmingham again on Saturday, don’t want to be out of pocket for a second time with a non refundable hotel.”

Another Twitter user said: “Hope everything are alright? Now I’m worried that the one in Birmingham on this Saturday will be rescheduled again… going to travel to China in June which means I might miss the concert.”

While Lula tweeted Sam Smith directly, adding: “If you cancel Birmingham show for Saturday you will have cost me £580 in hotels coming to see you How is it fair to do that to fans.”

Fans had said they were left with a ‘dilemma’ following the rescheduled Birmingham date due to it clashing with the city’s Pride celebrations. At the time, Claire Donne-Davis said on Facebook: “Feel better soon but that’s when Pride is! I have tickets for Pride!”

Resorts World Arena and regional press for Sam Smith’s tour have been approached for comment.
