Looking for a day out in the sunshine where you don’t have to spend any money? Then you need to head to Telford Town Park. It has a splash pad that’s open seven days a week.

You can visit any day between now and the end of the summer holidays to cool off and have fun in the water. It’s completely free and is one of seven themed areas you can enjoy at this huge 170-acre park.

There’s something for all ages, including an all-inclusive play area, sand pits, high ropes, a climbing wall and a zip wire. You can also go on a nature hunt around four pools and heathlands.

The water park is open from 11am to 4pm from May to August and from 11am to 3pm in September. It boasts pressurised water jets, sneaky soakers, wildlife imagery and musical fountain jets as well as individual and team play features.

Be sure to take a picnic to tuck into at one of the picnic areas next to the woodland pools. Alternatively, the visitor centre has a food kiosk and there’s often an ice cream van in the park.

Kids love playing in the sandpit in the play area where they’ll find manually operated diggers. There’s also a rocket slide with two enclosed dark chutes plus a tyre swing, balance beam and a 12 metre spider’s web to scramble up and down.

Nature lovers should look out for frogs, toads, dragonflies and herons around Hinkshay Pool and carp coming to the surface to feed in Grange Pool in the summer months, making it a great place to look out for kingfishers and great crested grebes.

Getting out in nature is brilliant for your mental health. Listen to Suzanne Alderson, founder of Parenting Mental Health, on the Brummie Mummies Podcast for lots of advice on how to boost your family’s health and wellbeing:

Leave time to visit the ornamental gardens here too. There’s a gazebo garden, water garden and summerhouse garden that were originally designed for the Chelsea Flower Show. And, for a bit of peace and quiet, check out the Maxwell Gardens that have been created in the style of a Japanese garden to display the gift of Japanese flowering trees.

There’s also the Friends Sensory Garden and the Quiet Garden and you can go on a Heritage Trail walk to visit the famous Stirchley Chimney, which is over 200 feet high.

Within the park itself, you’ll find Wonderland, a fun attraction full of fairytale characters, a giant, a maze and crazy golf (fees). And, if this wasn’t enough, you could also venture into nearby Telford town centre to check out the new indoor adventure golf experience that has opened in the former Debenhams unit.

Putt Putt Noodle boasts three nine-hole courses inspired by the cherry blossoms of Japan, crouching tigers of the Far East and the dragon symbols of Asia. And Flip Out, the UK’s first and biggest indoor adventure park group, is set to take over the other part of Debenhams soon too. Find out more via the Telford Town Park website.
