Coin collectors could earn thousands by finding rare two penny coin with ‘mistake’
The TikTok user, known as @CoinCollectingWizard, revealed a specific detail to look for in the 2p coin which could be worth thousands. So do you have this piece in your change?
It’s always worth rummaging through your coin collection to uncover any hidden treasures. Without you even realising, you could be sitting on a mega fortune as certain rare coins can fetch a pretty penny. Whether you’re the proud owner of a Kew Gardens 50p or have stumbled upon an ultra-rare Churchill piece worth £60,000, it’s always wise to keep your eyes open.
Now TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard recently revealed which 2p coin could potentially net you thousands. In a recent video shared with his 183,000 followers, he explained: “£1,000 if your 2p says New Pence. There are so many news articles and eBay listings of people trying to sell the 1971 New Pence Two Pence coin for thousands.
“The problem is this coin is just 2p, the only 2p coin that has a value of around £1,000 is the 1983 New Pence Two Pence coin. Here is what you need to look for and where you need to pay attention as I get thousands of comments asking about this.” He then went on to describe the 2p coin in question, stating it’s the 1983 version you’ll want to find.
He added: “So now we know 1971 is just 2p, let’s talk about the rare one. The 1983 New Pence coin was a mistake in Royal Mint coin packs when they changed the wording from New Pence to Two Pence. If you find a 2p coin, then check it first of all for the words New Pence. If it says New Pence, then check it for the date of 1983.”

Scour your pockets a special 2p coin could land you a tidy £1,000 if it’s the rare 1983 version. However, don’t get hopes too high for the 1971 2p as it isn’t worth a great deal. After the TikTok video went viral, clocking up over 4,300 likes and attracting 300 comments, users have been weighing in.
One puzzled person queried: “2p is still 2p, why would anyone pay £1,000? ” Another boasted: “I have all.” A third revealed: “I have one or two.” While another chipped in with: “I have this coin and I’m from Malaysia.” Looking for more rare coins?
Previously, a rare 1p coin with a ‘unique’ feature was revealed to be worth £140,000 – but there’s a little catch. The same user said: “This is the 1933 predecimal penny from the UK, so make sure you check your grandad’s old coin collection and keep an eye out for this date. Now obviously I don’t have the coin, this is a fake copy version.”
