Tensions Flare as Philippine and Chinese Vessels Collide in Disputed South China Sea
A Philippine vessel has collided with a Chinese coast guard vessel in the disputed South China Sea, ignoring repeated warnings from the Chinese side. The incident, described as “deliberately collided” in an “unprofessional and dangerous” manner by China’s Coast Guard, heightens tensions in the already volatile region.
According to statements released on Monday, the collision occurred around 3:24 a.m., with video evidence posted on China Coast Guard’s social media. The maritime security statements also detailed that the same Philippine vessel entered waters near Second Thomas Shoal after being prevented from accessing Sabina Shoal.
China’s Coast Guard spokesperson, Gan Yu, accused the Philippines of illegal intrusion near Sabina Shoal and provoking trouble, violating prior agreements. Despite these allegations, the Philippine Coast Guard has not yet responded. The incident comes after a provisional agreement in July aimed at easing tensions between the two nations.
