Ukraine war latest: China responds to claims more than 150 citizens fighting for Russia – as UK holds ‘reassurance force’ talks

The Chinese foreign ministry has said “irresponsible” remarks should be avoided after Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed approximately 155 Chinese citizens were fighting for the Russian military.

Spokesperson Lin Jian called on all parties to hold a “sober” view of China’s role. The country has tried to position itself as an actor in attempts to negotiate an end to the war, despite declaring a “no-limits” partnership with Russia.

The story has been developing at pace since the Ukrainian president said two Chinese citizens had been captured on the battlefield, and China brushed off claims there were more as “baseless”.

Last night, Zelenskyy said Russia was recruiting Chinese citizens via social media, that Chinese officials were aware of it and that Ukraine’s security service had compiled lists of names, birthdates and the Russian military units where they were assigned.

Ukraine was trying to assess whether the recruits were receiving instructions from Beijing, he said.

“The Chinese issue is serious,” Zelenskyy said.

“There are 155 people with names and passport details – 155 Chinese citizens who are fighting against Ukrainians on the territory of Ukraine. We are collecting information and believe that there are more, many more.”

He took the opportunity to appeal to the US: “America is clearly seeing today the actions undertaken by Russia.

“I do not understand why America is not reacting forcefully towards Russia. There is nothing in terms of diplomacy or statements.”

The Kremlin has effectively rejected a US proposal for an immediate and full 30-day halt in the fighting in Ukraine. The Kyiv government has consented to it.

On Wednesday, China’s foreign finistry dismissed as Zelenskyy’s remarks that more Chinese nationals were on the front line.

“Ukraine should correctly view China’s efforts and
constructive role in seeking a political solution to the
Ukrainian crisis,” ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said.
