MANILA, Philippines–Scottie Thompson’s recent inclusion in the PBA 50 Greatest Players list was met with both cheers and criticisms.

Still, the former PBA MVP welcomed the range of opinions, saying he respects everyone’s take on the matter.

“Actually, I don’t mind the negative thoughts much on social media but I truly respect everyone’s thoughts and comments because this is a free world. Anyone can say anything, whether it’s good or bad,” Thompson said during the league’s 50th anniversary gala night at Solaire North on Friday night.

“I totally respect whatever they say. Those are their opinions, I have my own, they have their own but it’s all about respect.”

Thompson’s inclusion in the golden list sparked debate online, with some saying he should accomplish more before receiving such recognition. Others argued that more deserving players were left out in favor of the Gin Kings’ floor general.

In the end, though, it was Thompson’s 2022 MVP run that ultimately sealed the deal for his bid to enter the all-important PBA list.

In that star-making season, he averaged 13.9 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He also helped Ginebra win that season’s Governors’ Cup title.

That performance, along with his accolades from the previous year, became the tipping point for his inclusion in the PBA’s 50 Greatest Players list—an honor that, admittedly, comes with pressure.

“The pressure’s there, but like I’ve always said, it’s better to overcome that pressure and deliver. I’m truly blessed for this opportunity.”
