Netflix has added dystopian drama with near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

Netflix has dropped a dystopian sci-fi drama set in Manchester that fans are calling “one of the best things” they’ve watched in years.

Years and Years, directed by Doctor Who creator Russell T Davies, is now available to stream on Netflix. The six-part series was originally released in 2019 on BBC and stars Emma Thompson as Vivienne Rooke, a businesswoman-turned-politician.

The creepy yet satirical show revolves around the Lyon family as time jumps rapidly from 2019 to the 2030s as technological advancements go haywire and political turmoil ensues.

Years and Years is set primarily in Greater Manchester, which is the birthplace of creator Russell T Davies, and shows how global change can effect ordinary people.

The series boasts an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has been praised for its eerily accurate predictions of things that have played out in recent years. Fans of the eerie show have taken to social media to talk about how “scary” aspects of Years and Years is.

Over on X, formerly known as Twitter, @Kukumoe__ said: “Years & Years on Netflix is triggering the conspiracy theorist in me. It’s also scary how specific outcomes could easily become a reality (we’re already here).”

@CharlotteJ66615 added: “It’s predicted so much! I remember watching it in 2019 and now it’s on Netflix 2025 it’s creepy how it’s predicted certain things especially the war with Ukraine and Russia.”

The excitement keeps on going as @Skhskh1996x said: “they’ve finally put Years and Years on Netflix THANK YOU GOD”, and @Nxshad said: “just finished watching years and years on netflix and I think its one of the best things I’ve watched in years (no over exaggeration)”

X user @Meganclibbens said: “I’m both truly entertained and thoroughly devastated by the #yearsandyears on #netflix . Also even more terrified of our current political state. When did life become a dystopian drama?”

Prior to the show dropping on Netflix, some Reddit users were discussing the news in r/YearsAndYearsBBC. Vogues21 said: “Just saw that Years and Years is going to be on Netflix (UK) in a few weeks — what a surprise! I watched it when it first aired on the BBC and it completely blew me away. Honestly feels more relevant now than ever.”

CappuchinoCupcake replied: “I binged it all this morning. I hadn’t seen it before and thought it was recently made. All those predictions…turnip getting a second term, Roe v Wade being overturned, the death of the queen.”

N30NIX added: “I did a rewatch too yday and honestly the “predictions” are sending chills… RoevWade, war in Ukraine, orange dumpling having 2nd term, King Charles… trade war between china/us .. I hope we’re not getting the rest of it materialise (though the way reform is garnering support I’m not optimistic)”
