You Won’t Be Able to Outrun Japan’s Latest Cop Car

The police force patrolling the roads surrounding the legendary Suzuka Circuit in Japan have a new car. And unlike the Toyota sedans usually run by the Mie Prefectural police, this one has 573 horsepower on tap.

The force took delivery of this Honda NSX on Monday during a ceremony held on the Suzuka circuit, complete with a full cover removal and musical performance. The car wears Japan’s traditional black and white livery, complete with the text “Police” on either door, and red lights mounted to the roof. Honestly, it looks great.

The department didn’t purchase or seize the NSX. Instead, Toshiya Kobayashi, a 43-year-old real estate mogul, donated the car according to Japanese publication Chunichi. Kobayashi, described as a “race enthusiast,” was present at the ceremony, exclaiming “That’s cool!” after seeing the car lap Suzuka during a slow, 62-mph demonstration run.

“Maybe they were being a little reserved about the speed,” he quipped, according to Chunichi.

The car’s value is 25 million yen (about $175,000), including all of the modifications to make it patrol-ready. It’s set to appear in a parade held at Suzuka in the lead up to the August SuperGT race, according to The Drive. So if you want to see the NSX cop car in person, you have time to book your tickets.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Japanese police departments use sporty cars. As The Drive points out, we’ve seen Nissan GT-Rs, Skylines, 350Zs, and RX-7s wear the same black and white livery. Our favorite, though, might just be the patrol-ready Land Cruiser.

If you’d rather see some true supercar-killing police cars, you’ll have to go to Dubai. The Middle Eastern city is well-known for maintaining a fleet of spectacular sports cars for events, like a Bugatti Veyron, a Porsche 918 Spyder, a Lamborghini Aventador, and more.
