Indigo’s flight 6E2142, bound from Delhi to Srinagar, made an emergency landing at the Jammu & Kashmir capital at 6:30 pm. The flight was caught up in the middle of a sudden hailstorm that caused severe turbulence and damaged the nose or radome, of the plane.
Videos viral on social media show panicking passengers. Some screaming, others praying. Luggages were tossed off the bin. A frequent flyer onboard told PTI that they have never experienced turbulence like this before. Amongst the 227-odd flyers, the occupants of the Indigo flight were a TMC delegation that was headed for Poonch.
The internet, meanwhile, erupted in admiration of the pilot and crew for its safe landing despite the challenges midair. A paranoid user posted on X/Twitter that the incident made them rethink air travel from Delhi to Srinagar; hence, a road trip.
Flights in the region were earlier prohibited for a shortwhile ever since Operation Sindoor on May 7th in response to the Pahalgam massacre on April 22 that killed 26 tourists. Several airports were shut during the tense escalation between India and Pakistan. After the ceasefire, the flight services resumed on May 14.
