Donald Trump announced the US is ready to discuss a potential TikTok deal with China, possibly involving Xi Jinping.

Donald Trump signed an executive order granting extension to TikTok.

Donald Trump said that the US is ready to begin discussions with China as early as Monday or Tuesday regarding a potential deal over TikTok, the popular short-video app owned by China-based ByteDance. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Donald Trump claimed the US “pretty much” has a deal in place and said talks could involve Chinese President Xi Jinping or one of his representatives.

“I think we’re gonna start Monday or Tuesday … talking to China- perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives- but we pretty much have a deal,” he said.

He also floated the possibility of a personal meeting, saying he might visit China or Xi might come to the US after both leaders reportedly extended such invitations to each other last month.

Third Extension And New Deadline

The announcement comes weeks after Donald Trump signed his third executive order delaying a potential ban on TikTok in the US, giving ByteDance until September 17 to finalize the sale of its US operations. The app has more than 170 million American users.

A deal to spin off TikTok’s US assets into a new, US-based company- majority-owned and operated by American investors- had been in the works earlier this year. But talks stalled after China signaled resistance, especially following Donald Trump’s announcement of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Donald Trump acknowledged that Beijing’s approval would likely be needed.

“I’m not confident, but I think so,” he said when asked whether China would agree, adding, “President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it’s good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it’s good for us.”

TikTok, in a statement, thanked both Donald Trump and US Vice President JD Vance, saying it would “continue to work with Vice President Vance’s Office” to finalize an agreement.
