Donald Trump posted his letter to PM Mark Carney, announcing 35% tariffs on Canadian imports into the US. He threatened with more levies if Ottawa retaliates.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) said he would impose 35% tariffs starting August 1 on Canada, as he dispatched his famous tariff letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In the letter posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump told Carney that the new duties will shoot up if the latter chooses to retaliate against his latest move.

Trump also said that he would impose blanket tariffs of 15% to 20% on most other trading partners.

The latest tariffs on Canada came in response to Ottawa’s “retaliation” amid the trade war with Washington and its failure to cooperate on key issues, which Trump described as unfair trade practices.

Attributing “Canada’s failure to stop the drugs” to the US as a key reason behind slapping the tariffs, Trump said that instead of working with the US, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs on US imports.

…”the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Canada. despite Canada having financially retaliated against the United States. As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation’s Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada’s failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our Country. Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own Tariffs. Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs,” Trump said in letter to Carney.

Threatening Canada against imposing any retaliatory tariffs on the US, Trump added, “If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35% that we charge.”

Trump, however, highlighted that if Canadian firms opt to move their operations to the United States, his government would help them with quick approvals.

“We will do everything possible to get approvals quickly, professionally, and routinely — in other words, in a matter of weeks,” he said.

The US President has so far posted letters to 22 countries, announcing new tariffs as the 3-month deadline for the April 2 tariff pause was extended to August 1, giving countries a chance to negotiate a trade deal with the US.

He has so far imposed tariffs on allies such as Japan and South Korea, and several other nations. India, an ally, is already negotiating a trade deal with the US, and the talks have entered their final stages, reports claimed.

In an interview with NBC News published on Thursday, the President said that other trading partners that had not yet received his letters would likely face blanket tariffs.

“Not everybody has to get a letter. You know that. We’re just setting our tariffs. We’re just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it’s 20% or 15%. We’ll work that out now,” Trump was quoted as saying by the network.
