And no, it’s not because of bad service. Welcome to The Restaurant of Mistaken Orders, where mix-ups are part of the menu. You might ask for dumplings and get miso soup instead, or find your server accidentally taking a sip of your water before handing it over. But far from being frustrating, this heartwarming Kyoto dining experience offers something deeper than a meal, yes, it celebrates empathy, awareness, and delicious unpredictability. Still scratching your head? Let’s take a peek inside one of Japan’s most joyfully unconventional restaurants
Staffed by individuals living with dementia, the restaurant invites you to slow down, laugh and embrace the human side of hospitality.
The Origin of the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders
A Japanese television director, Shiro Oguni, launched this business to flip the script on perceptions about ageing and cognitive impairment. Interestingly, the primary qualification for the job is to have dementia. Yes, you read that correctly. FYI, Dementia is the term used to denote a decline in memory, learning and communication skills, which is further caused by a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s.
Oguni’s Unconventional Idea
The idea to launch the one-of-a-kind restaurant popped up on Shiro Oguni’s mind after he was served a dumpling instead of a burger at a nursing home. At first, he was going to send the dumpling back, but then he realised he was in a different world, with varying levels of functionality, including mistakes that didn’t really harm him. Why not just accept what he received as a way of respecting the difficulties the people around him faced, as an act of kindness and humility?
Beyond Culinary Delight – A Social Change
Over the years, the Japanese restaurant has grabbed the Internet’s attention for its approach to spreading awareness. One of the videos shared on Instagram in 2021 captured an inside glimpse of the restaurant, giving a peek into the joyful experience people have while visiting the restaurant.
One of the visitors also shared his experience on-camera, saying, “I think there should be more places like this.” Visibly moved, another echoed the same sentiment. Appearing next in the clip, he asked, “Dementia patients are just like you and me so why can’t we develop relationship with them?”
A text overlay on the clip also informed, “37% of the orders are mixed up but the customers just laugh it off.”
A Case Of Humanity
And now, a content creator named Kuldeep Singhania has talked about the restaurant, reflecting on how the eatery is changing lives for good. The clip begins with the influencer enacting a scene where he places an order for paneer pizza. Upon being served, he is left totally shocked. Instead of pizza, the waiter served him cookies, leaving him furious.
Realising that the eatery specialises in “mistaken orders,” he greets the waiter with a polite thank you. The content creator, then, goes on to describe the functioning of the restaurant, saying, “99 per cent of the visitors are happy when they leave the restaurant after a joyful dining experience.”
The heart-warming video soon resonated with Internet users as they began pouring in their reactions via comments on the social media post. One of them wrote, “Bro dropped cute stuff at 12 am.” Another added, “Creativity on the next level.”
Moved by the video, someone else said, “I needed to see this today. Thank you.” “Japanese people are true gentlemen,” read another comment.
In other comments, users also advised taking written orders instead of memorising them.
