Is TikTok back in India after a half-decade ban? Who can make an account

India’s internet went buzzing this week over whispers that TikTok might finally be back. Users reported glimpses of limited access to the app and other Chinese platforms, sparking excitement and curiosity across social media. For years, TikTok had been one of India’s most popular apps, with millions of users creating short videos that went viral overnight. Its sudden ban in 2020 left a huge gap in the short-video landscape, giving rise to homegrown alternatives. But the latest rumours? The Centre has cleared the air: no decision has been taken to lift the ban, and TikTok remains firmly off Indian app stores.

Official statement ends buzzGovernment sources on Friday dismissed all claims of the app being unblocked. “The Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement/news is false and misleading,” ANI quoted officials as saying. What sparked the confusionAccording to a Times of India report, the rumours picked up after TikTok, AliExpress, and Shein appeared to be partly accessible to some users. While TikTok’s website shows the homepage, further access is blocked. Its mobile app remains fully unavailable across the country. Similarly, AliExpress– though visible– does not allow shopping to take place.

Why were the apps blocked?According to the report, back in June 2020, TikTok, AliExpress, Shein and 58 other Chinese apps were banned in India. At the time, the government flagged data security and privacy risks, calling the apps “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the state and public order.” The move came amid rising tensions between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Who can make an account?According to media reports, at present, no new user accounts can be created on TikTok in India. The app remains blocked, and the website does not allow login or further access beyond the homepage. With the government clarifying that there has been no change in its 2020 order, Indian users cannot open or operate TikTok accounts.
