Malayalam actor Navya Nair faced an unexpected setback during her recent visit to Australia for Onam celebrations. She was fined AUD 1,980 (approximately Rs 1.14 lakh) at Melbourne International Airport after officials found a jasmine gajra in her handbag. While jasmine flowers are an integral part of cultural traditions in South India, strict biosecurity laws in Australia do not permit their entry.
Navya Nair was travelling to Melbourne to participate in Onam celebrations organised by the Malayali Association of Victoria. During the airport checks, officials discovered a 15 cm string of jasmine flowers in her carry bag. The actor later explained that her father had prepared two jasmine strings before her journey. She wore one from Kochi to Singapore and carried the second one in her handbag for use on her onward flight.

At the airport, officials imposed a fine of AUD 1,980, which is to be paid within 28 days. Navya admitted she was unaware of the rules but accepted responsibility. “What I did was against the law. It was a mistake I made unknowingly. However, ignorance is no excuse,” she stated while recounting the incident at a public event.
Despite the heavy penalty, Navya treated the matter with humour. She shared a short video collage on Instagram showing herself wearing the jasmine gajra, captioned, “A show-off right before paying the fine.” This lighthearted approach showed her acceptance of the experience as a lesson rather than a setback.
Before her departure to Melbourne, she had already shared her festive mood with followers through a post on social media. Posting photos from her flight, she wrote, “First-ever Thiruvonam in the skies! Though I miss being in naadu, carrying the spirit of Onam with me is a joy of its own. Work calls — and that too is another happiness. Onboard Singapore Airlines… Melbourne, here I come.”

Navya Nair, a two-time Kerala State Film Award winner for Best Actress, made her debut in 2001 with Ishtam directed by Sibi Malayil. She went on to establish herself across Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada films. Her notable works include Nandanam, Mazhathullikkilukkam, Kunjikoonan, Kalyanaraman, Vellithira, Ammakilikkoodu, Gramophone, Pattanathil Sundaran, Jalolsavam, Chathikkatha Chanthu, Azhagiya Theeye, Pandippada, Saira, Kanne Madanguka, Sila Nerangalil, Bhagyada Balegara, Drishya, Drishya 2, Oruthee and Janaki Jaane.

The fine imposed on Navya Nair illustrates how cultural practices that are normal in one country may conflict with laws in another. For many South Indians, wearing jasmine gajras is customary, especially during festivals. However, Australia’s stringent biosecurity rules prohibit carrying such items to prevent the risk of pests and diseases. The incident is a reminder for travellers to check regulations before carrying even small personal items abroad.
