Marcelo Saracchi’s strong start to life at Celtic has won him a surprise international recall for Uruguay.

Former Leeds Utd boss Marcelo Bielsa has liked what he’s been seeing from the left back and brought him in from the international wilderness after over a year on the sidelines.

The Hoops defender arrived on loan from Argentinian giants Boca Juniors on transfer deadline day as back up to Kieran Tierney.

However, the Scotland star has found full fitness hard to come by and Saracchi has played more often than was initially expected.

He’s started three league games for Celtic, including the weekend’s comeback win against Motherwell at Parkhead.

The last of his nine international caps came a year ago as the twice world champions drew 1-1 with Brazil in a World Cup qualifier..

But 70-year-old Bielsa has been watching him in Scotland from afar and has recalled him to La Celeste.

Saracchi will travel to Malaysia to play two international friendlies for Uruguay against the Dominican Republic on Friday in Kuala Lumpur and Uzbekistan in Malacca next week.

It could open the door for the 27-year-old to earn a place at next year’s World Cup Finals with Uruguay having already qualified after finishing behind Argentina, Ecuador and Colombia in fourth place in the South American section.
