Couple sleeps at Singapore Airport to save Rs 35,500 during Formula 1 weekend

A couple sparked mixed reactions on social media after choosing to spend the night at Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport instead of booking a hotel, hoping to save around $400 (Rs 35,500) in the midst of soaring accommodation prices during the Formula One weekend.

The video, shared on TikTok by Sheri, captured their unusual overnight adventure. She explained that they had just arrived from the Bintan Islands and were reluctant to pay the high hotel rates. “Hotel prices and lodging prices are astronomical because of the Formula One race, and we did not want to pay $400 just to rest,” she said in the video.

Sheri took viewers through their night at the airport, showing how they explored the sprawling mall before settling in for sleep. She mentioned briefly shopping at Uniqlo and considering catching a movie while searching for a place to rest.

“We’re not supposed to sleep here, but we’re looking,” she added, still roaming around the airport. Eventually, the couple found a spot to rest called “Sleeper Village” alongside roughly 30 other overnight visitors, keeping an eye on their belongings.

She also recorded clips of her freshening up at the airport’s bathroom before heading back to the Sleeper Village to wind down for the night. “Wish us luck. Hoping all of our stuff stays safe around us,” she said.

After a night on the airport floor, the couple shared their morning update, talking about their experience. Cheri said she had managed only about four and a half to five hours of sleep, waking frequently throughout the night.

Despite the lack of rest, the couple celebrated their cost-saving success, relieved they didn’t have to pay for a hotel. “Not the best night of sleep, but we did it. We didn’t have to pay for a hotel. Wow, go us,” she said towards the end of her video.

Users on social media didn’t seem to know what to make of this behaviour, as some praised their creativity and resourcefulness, while others debated whether spending the night in an airport was appropriate or safe.
