The latest season of Indian Idol 16 paid an emotional tribute to the late Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg with a special segment on the show. Contestant Satyendra Yein and singer Shreya Ghoshal came together to perform Garg’s famous song Mayabini. The tribute was widely shared on social media, quickly garnering millions of views. Fans across the country were reminded of Garg’s massive influence and how his songs touched people from all walks of life.In the promo, judge Vishal Dadlani was seen appreciating Zubeen Garg’s legacy. He told contestant Satyendra Yein that Garg was the “greatest of all time.” Dadlani also honoured him with a heartfelt performance of Jane Kya from the film Pyaar Ke Side Effects.
Since Zubeen Garg’s passing, Mayabini has become an anthem of mourning in Assam and beyond. The song is being played everywhere inside homes, at public gatherings, and across social media platforms as people come together to express their grief. From Guwahati to several Indian cities, the track has become a symbol of respect and remembrance for the late singer.The song carried a special meaning for Garg himself. Back in 2019, he had said, “This song [Mayabini] is a fantasy for me. When I die, this is the song that will play.” After his untimely death, fans have been honouring this wish, playing the song repeatedly during memorials.The lyrics of Mayabini “Nijanor gaan morXekh hobo bhabotumar bukut” have taken on a deeper significance for mourners. Translated loosely, they mean: “My song of loneliness will end, I believe, at your heart.” For countless fans, these words feel like a personal message from Garg, making the tribute even more emotional.Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 during a sea outing near Singapore’s St. John’s Island.Meanwhile, Indian Idol 16 has returned with the theme Yaadon Ki Playlist: Jahaan Awazein Aaj Wali Aur Gaane Aap. This season will see contestants bringing together timeless classics with modern styles, giving old songs a new flavour. The judging panel includes Vishal Dadlani, Shreya Ghoshal, and rapper Badshah. The show is set to premiere on October 18.
