Apple is planning to reduce the production of iPhone Air. But why?

iPhone Air is slim but so is its sale numbers. But why?

“You’re Apple’s CEO. What do you fix or add for iPhone Air 2?” A seemingly straightforward question posed by an X user @thesamuelnam elicited responses from the tech-loving community, perhaps proving why Apple’s iPhone Air has left buyers and smartphone reviewers alike underwhelmed. Marketed as the “thinnest iPhone ever” and boasting the “power of pro inside”, the Cupertino giant became a topic of particular interest as reports of iPhone Air doing weak sales surfaced online. In a report published by MacRumors, the thinnest iPhone ever is reportedly witnessing underwhelming sales, pushing the tech giant to consider cutting down on its production by a million units.

So what exactly went “wrong” with the iPhone Air?

Launch And Marketing

Apple’s marketing and visuals of a levitating iPhone Air outshone its rival Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, according to the tech fraternity. The sleek design, the cutting-edge dimensions of 5.6mm and only 165 grams in weight created enough buzz during its launch. However, the novelty of the iPhone Air that replaced the Plus models quickly wore off. But why?

“Too Pricey”

iPhone Air’s price started from Rs 1,19,900 in India for the base variant and maxed out at Rs 1,59,900 for the 1TB offering. The ultra-slim smartphone came in four colours and hit the stores on September 19.

To provide some context, Air’s sibling, the regular iPhone 17, starts from Rs 82900 for the base variant. iPhone 17 has also been widely recommended by the tech reviewing community, calling it the perfect time to upgrade your smartphone. iPhone 17, apart from its palatable colours, also boasts all the bells and whistles of the Pro series. A significant jump in the selfie camera, a 120 Hz display, and a decent battery.

iPhone Air, on the other hand, comes with a single camera, a single speaker, and an understandably slimmer battery. These make for a tougher sell for Air.

“What Would You Change In iPhone 2?”

Similar sentiments were expressed under the question that was asked on X. “A second speaker,” responded one user.

“ultra wide camera,” added another.

“Second camera, bottom speaker, High speed USB, better heat handling. If Samsung can do it, Apple should be able to,” a third user chimed.

An overwhelming number of users urged for the addition of a second camera and a slightly longer battery life.

iPhone Air Sells Out

While the news of Apple considering chopping the production of Air hogged social media timelines, a second report suggesting that iPhone Air sold out “within hours” in China is worth noting.

“Trust Build Over Time”

An X user who goes by the handle @VadimYuryev claimed that he spoke to an Apple store employee who stated that the average customer opted for the iPhone series they trusted. Apple iPhone Air was still in its infancy.

“Spoke to an employee at the Apple Store. He said everyone just wants what they know and trust, the Pro models. Even if it has enough battery life for someone, they can’t trust is enough to upgrade (especially if only upgrading every few years). Will take time to build trust.”

Another argued that offering less for a higher price was where Apple may have faltered with its ambitious project.

“Paying more money for less just because is not a good strategy. Plus, the benefit of thinness is removed when it can’t lay flat, and you need to put on a case because the cameras don’t allow it to lay flat, @Thepolz wrote.
