Why 1 city in Southeast Michigan moved Halloween from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 this year

MARINE CITY, Mich. – A St. Clair County city set its trick-or-treat hours for Saturday, rather than the usual hours set for the day of Halloween.

According to the Marine City City Commission meeting agenda for Oct. 16, Mayor Jennifer Vandenbossche talked about moving the city’s trick-or-treat hours for Halloween due to a high school football playoff game that’s happening on Friday, Oct. 31.

Marine City Varisty Football will play Clawson on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at East China Stadium. According to the high school, this is an MHSAA playoff game.

On Oct. 17, the city posted on social media that Marine City’s trick-or-treat hours have been set for Saturday, Nov. 1, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Here were some comments from residents on the social media post’s comment section who opposed the decision:

• “Bahahah yeah we’re sticking to the 31st the actual day of halloween.”
• “Halloween is October 31st… Woke AF”
• “Why would the game not be moved? Absolutely confused and my son plays varsity.”
• “Halloween is October 31st . There no Halloween on November 1st.”
• “Why??? That’s dumb. October 31st is Halloween. That’s the stupidest thing I ever heard. I’m sure.”
• “What a joke a curfew in America made by the city get a life”
• “Our city changed it one year and it was horrible, all the other cities came out when they found out and we ran out of candy within the first 30 mins. I have never saw so many kids, cars parked on lawns it was horrible”
• “Does that even seem right to you? Trick or treating, NOVEMBER 1st? Ew, no thank you.”
• “Lol, who’s dumb idea was that? Christmas doesn’t fit my schedule this year, let’s make it Saturday instead”
• “Boy you think quite highly of yourselves. Fat chance, Halloween is Fri”
• “Really? The day after Halloween?”

• “Double trick or treating? Yes, please. Lol Not sure why people are complaining, just go a town over for 31st. Simple.”
• “Yall realize that this is an additional date, not to replace Halloween but for a second date for families that can’t participate because of the football game on Halloween”
• “If changing Trick or Treating is your biggest problem in your life, consider yourself very blessed”
• “What’s crazy is that people are mad or bitter about this?! Changing the date makes it so the kiddos playing football or the siblings and parents of football players can still participate. We don’t go to the football games but my kids were THRILLED to know they get a SECOND HALLOWEEN!!! We are going to go to another town nearby and trick or treat with cousins on Halloween + enjoy trick or treating at home the next day. Let’s remember this is a holiday literally FOR CHILDREN. They aren’t changing the date of Christmas guys. It’s Halloween. There’s sooo many other problems in the world to care about. This isn’t it.”
