Post Malone paid tribute to the late Assamese icon Zubeen Garg
Post Malone’s first-ever performance in Guwahati turned emotional on Monday, December 8, as the global music star paid a tribute to late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
Midway through his set, Malone paused to address the audience and acknowledged the legacy of the celebrated regional icon. “To be in the home of the great legendary Zubeen tonight, ladies and gentlemen. I just hope everyone’s having an amazing day and an amazing night. My name is Austin Richard Post, and I’ve come to play some street songs,” he said, prompting an enthusiastic response from fans at the venue. Videos of the moment were quickly shared across social media platforms.
Audience members and admirers of Zubeen Garg described the gesture as deeply moving, with many calling it a rare moment of international recognition for the Assamese music legend, delivered in his home state.
Ahead of the concert, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had welcomed Post Malone to the city and highlighted the significance of the performance. “For the first time ever, global music icon and Grammy-nominated artist Post Malone will be performing in Guwahati, a historic occasion which places our city firmly on the world entertainment map. My best wishes on this occasion and I hope everyone loves Assam’s hospitality,” he wrote on social media.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, after reportedly drowning while swimming in sea waters off Singapore during travel related to the North East India Festival. Singapore authorities, who conducted the initial autopsy under the Coroners Act, said no foul play was suspected and listed drowning as the cause of death. They also shared preliminary findings with Indian officials, noting that the investigation could take several months.
In Assam, the state police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and launched an extensive probe. Over 60 FIRs were registered across the state, followed by multiple raids at locations including the residences of the festival organiser, Garg’s manager and other associates.
A second post-mortem examination conducted in Delhi reportedly found no evidence of poisoning and reaffirmed drowning as the cause of death, countering earlier claims of toxic substances.
The investigation has led to several arrests, including the festival organiser, the singer’s manager, two personal security officers, band members and a close relative who is a police officer. Authorities are also examining alleged financial irregularities involving transactions exceeding ₹1.1 crore linked to the personal security officers.
Despite the medical findings, the Assam government has maintained that the case involves criminal wrongdoing. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assam Assembly that the death was “plain and simple murder” and not accidental. The SIT is said to be nearing completion of its probe, with a chargesheet expected to be filed by December 12, 2025.
