Thailand issues a response statement

As outrage grew, Thailand issued a clarification through its Thai -Cambodian border press centre. Where officials stated, “The actions were not intended to involve religion, beliefs, or disrespect any sacred entities, but were solely for area management and security.” The statement further alleged that Cambodian troops had built the statue on disputed territory to claim sovereignty, leading the Thai forces to act within their national jurisdiction, and expressed “sincere regret for any discomfort that may have arisen from misunderstandings” caused by the images. On the other side, Cambodian authorities maintained their ground. Lim Chanpanha, spokesperson for the Preah Vihear authorities, told Khmer Times (link), “We condemn the destruction of ancient temples and statues that are worshipped by Buddhist and Hindu followers.” Cambodia claimed the statue was in its own territorial zone and held cultural significance for both Buddhist and Hindu devotees.
