Trump ‘slams NATO ally over Nobel snub as he issues warning’

“We also support NATO’s responsible strengthening of the work for security and stability in the Arctic. Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, I have repeatedly clearly explained to Trump what is well known, namely that it is an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian government, that awards the prize,” he also said.

Sir Keir Starmer will speak at Downing Street after Donald Trump’s threats to ramp up tariffs until a deal is reached for the US to buy Greenland.

The Prime Minister has told the US president it is “wrong” to apply tariffs to the UK and other European allies opposing his efforts to take over Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.

On Monday, Sir Keir will set out the UK’s approach to working with allies and how the country will be “led by our values”, according to a Government source.

Donald Trump reportedly told the Prime Minister of Norway he “no longer feels an obligation to think purely of peace” in a blistering letter leaked to Norwegian media.

According to this document, a letter to the Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre, President Trump linked his wish to take over Greenland to the fact he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The letter was published by Norwegian tabloid VG after being published on X [Twitter] by journalist Nick Schifrin. “Dear Jonas: Since your country decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping eight wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think exclusively about peace, although it will always be dominant, but can now think about what is good and right for the United States,” the message read.

Prime Minister Støre confirmed to VG the letter is authentic. He said: “This is a message I received yesterday afternoon from President Trump. It came in response to a short message to President Trump from me earlier in the day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb.”

In his message to Støre, Trump also said: “Denmark cannot protect this country from Russia or China, and why do they have ‘ownership’ anyway? There are no written docuements, it’s just that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we also had boats landing there. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding and now NATO should do something for the United States. The world is not safe until we have complete and total control of Greenland.”

Støre previously said “we conveyed our position against his increased tariffs against Norway, Finland and other selected countries” and explained “Norway’s position on Greenland is firm. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark in this matter”.

The US president said he would charge the UK a 10% tariff “on any and all goods” sent to the US from February 1, increasing to 25% from June 1, until a deal is reached for Washington to purchase Greenland from Denmark.

Mr Trump said the same would apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland. Early on Monday, Mr Trump said Denmark had failed to heed warnings to protect Greenland from the threat of Russia.

He wrote on his Truth Social social media site: “NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that ‘you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland. Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done.”
