Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has already begun his management journey and has been tipped to eventually take charge at Anfield. He has been fortunate to learn from the very best, too, having observed Jurgen Klopp in action during the closing stages of the German boss’ Anfield reign.

Torres retired in 2019 after an 18-year career in football. He scored 81 goals for Liverpool before departing for Chelsea in a £50million transfer in 2011 and also featured in Spain, Italy and Japan, concluding his playing days at Sagan Tosu.

The 42-year-old transitioned into coaching in 2021, operating within the academy structure at his former club Atletico Madrid. Since 2025, he has overseen Atleti’s reserve side Atletico Madrileno, who compete in the third division in Spain.

“Fernando Torres as Liverpool manager one day? Definitely. He’s taken a different path to Cesc Fabregas, he has been patient and has preferred to start little by little with the youth team, gaining experience,” former Spain international striker Fernando Llorente told Hajper.

Llorente added: “I think Fernando will become a great coach because he had an incredible career, knows a lot about football and has surely been preparing for the right moment to make the jump.”

Torres’ eagerness to develop was clear in 2024 when he observed Klopp and assistant manager Pep Lijnders in the build-up to a Premier League fixture against Brighton. “I’ve had the opportunity to see how everything works from the inside, which is great,” he told club media at the time.

“I’m a big fan of Jurgen and his staff and all around the AXA training facility, which is very different than when I was here, so obviously the club grows a lot, and I have the chance to see why. There are many reasons but it’s amazing to be here and to be able to meet with Jurgen and Pep and all the staff to learn and try to understand the Liverpool way.”

Armando de la Morena, who coached Torres when he was coming through the youth ranks at Atleti, also backed the Spaniard to reach the highest level. “A coach like Fernando, knowing his career a bit, as a player and always with the respect that he has acted, has the conditions to be a great coach,” he told Marca.

“I know it from the players too, who tell me wonders about him, how he transmits, how he gives them the concepts. So what I see in him is that if everything is going the right way, then we have a future coach for Spanish football and for Atletico and hopefully for the national team as well. Whatever he wants.”

Now into his second campaign at the helm of Atletico Madrileno, Torres has the side in impressive form as they set their sights on promotion to the Segunda Division.

With just five fixtures remaining, they occupy third place and appear destined for a play-off should they fail to close the four-point deficit to league leaders Eldense.
