103 years later, NTR’s aura still feels unmatched: Why NTR still dominates reels, memes, cinema debates and Telugu pride

Divine Lord Krishna dressed in “Peethamberam” (clothed in yellow), carrying his precious “Bansuri” (flute), wearing elaborate royal costumes with traditional jewellery, a radiant crown, his Sikhipincham (peacock feather), and a calm smile. Grace in every walk and talk. A ray of angelic poise beaming through his face. This is the first image that comes to the mind of a cinephile when thinking about the legend NTR. He is considered the pioneer of portraying Krishna on the silver screen. Adding to his majestic appearance, his expressive eyes, composed body language, and powerful dialogue delivery made Krishna truly come to life in Mayabazar.

NTR: The evergreen legend who redefined Telugu cinema and politics

Even 103 years after his birth, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) is still considered the face of the Telugu film industry. He was more than just a superstar; he became a cultural phenomenon across both cinema and politics. He dominated the Telugu film industry by acting in more than 300 movies and defined an entire generation.

Most film stars belong to a generation. NTR somehow belongs to all of them. Older audiences remember watching his films in packed theatres. The middle generations grew up hearing his dialogues at home. Younger audiences now rediscover him through reels, memes, remastered clips and yearly birthday tributes. There are three biopics made on NTR, namely, NTR: Kathanayakudu, NTR: Mahanayakudu, and Lakshmi’s NTR.

What makes NTR’s impact so special is that it goes beyond just acting. He was one of the first Indian actors whose fan following transformed into political influence. By founding the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982, he reshaped regional politics and became Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh within months, strongly championing Telugu pride and identity in the national landscape. Even today, his legacy lives on through pop culture references, remastered clips, reels, and tributes from fans and actors alike, including his grandson Jr. NTR and many contemporary stars.

Mayabazar: The film that still feels relevant in this time

If there’s one movie that explains why NTR still matters, it’s Mayabazar. The movie was released in 1957. This Kadiri Venkata Reddi-directed movie remains one of Telugu cinema’s most celebrated classics. NTR’s character, lord Krishna, radiates divinity and godly grace and is still considered the best portrayal of Krishna in silver screen. The way he delivered dialogues like “China Chepanu Peda Chepa…” (“The small fish, the big fish… The small illusion, the ultimate illusion… This is the truth, that is Veda!“) and “Ala Ra Dariki!” ( “Come on, get in line!“) are still praised online and are circulating through social media. For many viewers, Mayabazar is not just a movie but a benchmark.

Dana Veera Soora Karna: Maximum drama, maximum aura

Long before the cinematic universe and multiple roles were a “thing”, there was Dana Veera Soora Karna. In the 1977 movie, NTR was doing triple roles. He acted as Karna, Duryodhana and Krishna while also directing the film. He was a perfect example of multitasking. This movie was a blockbuster and considered one of the best films by NT Rama Rao. Basically, NTR understood the “main character” energy a lot before it became a trend. This movie amused people and is still a topic of discussion about how a single man can perform the three main characters, Karna, Duryodhana and Krishna at the same time flawlessly.

Pathala Bhairavi, Lava Kusa And The Rise Of Mass Telugu Cinema

NTR is highly praised for his mythological cinema, like Lava Kusa, but his influence also extended to fantasy movies like Jagadeka Veeruni Katha and Pathala Bhairavi. He excelled across genres, including social dramas, folklore, and historical films, where his commanding screen presence and natural charisma consistently stood out. His commercial entertainers, like Adavi Ramudu, also proved he could dominate both family audiences and mass viewers. In many ways, NTR helped define what mainstream Telugu stardom would eventually become.
