What is the world’s most expensive variety of mango?

Mangoes are often called the “king of fruits”, but some varieties are so rare and luxurious that they cost more than premium gadgets and designer products. Across the world, certain mangoes are prized for their sweetness, unique flavour, limited production and careful cultivation methods.

Among all of them, one variety stands out as the world’s most expensive mango in 2025.

MIYAZAKI MANGO HOLDS THE TOP SPOT

The Miyazaki mango from Japan is currently considered the most expensive mango variety in the world. It is grown in Miyazaki Prefecture under highly controlled conditions and is famous for its deep red colour, juicy texture and extremely high sugar content.

These mangoes can cost anywhere between 2.5 lakh and 3 lakh per kilogram, while premium auction batches may sell for even higher prices internationally.

The fruit is often called the “Egg of the Sun” because of its glowing red appearance and rich taste.

WHY IS MIYAZAKI MANGO SO EXPENSIVE?

Several factors make Miyazaki mangoes incredibly costly:

  • Strict quality checks before sale

  • Limited production every season

  • Special cultivation techniques

  • Controlled sunlight and temperature

  • High sweetness level of 15% or more

  • Luxury gifting culture in Japan

Each mango is carefully wrapped and monitored while growing. Farmers even use nets so the fruit does not get damaged when it naturally falls from the tree after ripening.

TAIYO NO TAMAGO IS ALSO A PREMIUM VARIETY

Another luxury Japanese mango variety is Taiyo No Tamago, which translates to “Egg of the Sun.” Only mangoes meeting strict standards for weight, colour and sweetness receive this title.

These mangoes are sold in premium fruit auctions and luxury stores and may cost around 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh per dozen.

INDIA’S RARE AND EXPENSIVE MANGOES

India is home to some highly valued mango varieties as well.

NOOR JAHAN MANGO

Grown mainly in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur region, Noor Jahan mangoes are famous for their massive size. A single mango can weigh between 2 and 3 kilograms.

Because of limited production and climate-related challenges, these mangoes can cost 500 to 1,500 per piece.

ALPHONSO MANGO

The Alphonso or Hapus mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad in Maharashtra is one of the most premium mangoes in India.

Known for its rich aroma, smooth texture and balanced sweetness, premium-grade Alphonso mangoes in 2025 are priced between 1,200 and 2,200 per dozen.

Its GI tag and limited seasonal availability further increase its value.

WHY LUXURY MANGOES ARE GAINING POPULARITY

Premium mangoes are increasingly being seen as luxury food items around the world. They are often gifted during festivals, corporate events and special occasions.

Social media trends, international exports and growing interest in exotic fruits have also increased demand for rare mango varieties.

While many people enjoy regular mangoes every summer, luxury varieties like Miyazaki prove that this beloved fruit can also become a symbol of exclusivity and prestige.

From Japan’s carefully cultivated red mangoes to India’s royal Alphonso and giant Noor Jahan, these fruits are more than just desserts — they are prized experiences enjoyed by fruit lovers across the globe.
