WhatsApp, the famous instant messaging application with 2 billion users, is introducing a novelty defined as “revolutionary”, that is, the one that allows you to shop directly from the software controlled by Meta with a connected credit card. This was announced by the same company that also owns Facebook and Instagram, revealing the details of the partnership with the Indian e-commerce of fresh products “JioMart”. The communication, disseminated on the official blog, was then relaunched by the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, with a post that appeared on his Facebook profile. “I am thrilled to launch our partnership with JioMart in India. This is our first end-to-end shopping experience on WhatsApp: now people can buy groceries from JioMart directly in a chat, ”he explained.
The “revolution” in the corporate world
The ability to make purchases via WhatsApp in India, a country where the app has about 400 million users, is currently limited to “JioMart” only, but according to Meta this experience “will revolutionize the way millions of companies across the ‘India connect with their customers, bringing unparalleled simplicity and convenience to people’s shopping experience ”. Corporate messaging, Zuckerberg said, “is an area with real momentum and chat-based experiences like this will be how people and businesses communicate for years to come.”
How the service works
The “JioMart” catalog, as mentioned, is already available for Indian users. But how does the experience work in detail? We start by sending a message to the WhatsApp Business number of the same e-commerce, which responds through a bot which, after greeting the customer, shows a button that allows you to start the procedure managed through a page in the “JioMart” app, a section that the user views directly within WhatsApp and not by opening an external browser on their mobile device. For each product is shown the name, a photo, the price and the “+” button that is used to add it to the virtual cart. Also from the cart, it is then possible to view the overall list of products already ordered, their price and then proceed to send the order and the relative payment. Finally, it is possible to choose between three different payment methods: cash on delivery, through the “JioMart” website or on WhatsApp. In the latter case, the transaction is managed by UPI (Unified Payments Interface ”, which is a digital payment system developed by National Payments Corporation of India, a managed technology platform regulated by the Government of India.
