One US couple — John Kernohan, 61 and his wife Fin, 44 — have embraced an unconventional lifestyle. They have sold all their possessions to live a debt-free life in a small off-grid shed in the woods. The couple, who met online in 2010, overcame a distance of over 4,000 miles and got married in 2012. Originally from Miami, Florida, John invited Fin — who hails from Thailand, but was living in London — to join him in the US. Their decision to downsize and live off-grid reflects a practical approach to simplifying their lives and achieving financial independence.
Fin changed his lifestyle as per her husband, John. Having previously lived on a narrowboat and in an attic with a passion for camping, she suggested selling John’s spacious Miami property and transitioning into a cosier off-grid cabin.
The couple divested themselves of nearly all their possessions and moved into a 304 square-foot shed, acquired for $6,500. They invested an additional $6,000 in furnishings, electronics, and special features.
Sharing the pictures and video of their new home on social media, they captioned: “The greenhouse kitchen extension … a commercial sink, garden beds, mini koi pond and plants for days!”. Social media users have commented on the video.
One user wrote, “Your home is fabulous! With the greenhouse extension, do you have any issues with pests/insects in the house?”. Another user added, “Does it get freezing in winter..?! For the past 12 years, he has chosen to reside in an off-grid cabin, embracing a sustainable lifestyle. This decision led him to acquire additional land where he built multiple cabins. Notably, the cabins feature a unique greenhouse kitchen and bathroom powered by thermal and solar energy. Demonstrating a true affinity for this lifestyle, he not only expanded his personal living space but also entered the rental market, making it a substantial source of income.
Their home incorporates a multi-functional bathroom and greenhouse, along with an outdoor kitchen featuring a pond stocked with Koi Carp.
In 2013, Fin permanently relocated to the US to live with John. She cited her fondness for a natural setting as the motivation. Their venture into off-grid living began with the leasing of a plot of land, priced at $1,200 (£960).
Living off-grid for 12 years, the couple relies on solar, thermal energy, and a biogas system for cooking gas from non-compostable waste. Debt-free without a mortgage, they host events like tiny house festivals and workshops at their homestead.
