Sydney man charged after allegedly posting online threat targeting international flight bound for Philippines

A young man has been charged after allegedly posting an online threat targeting a flight that he was later on.

The 22-year-old man from southwest Sydney is accused of posting a threat on social media directed at a flight from Sydney to the Philippines, before boarding the plane on December 19.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) were alerted to the online threat the same day, promptly identifying the flight and screening it to ensure no explosives were onboard.

An AFP liaison officer teamed up with the Philippines National Police to track down and question the man upon his arrival in Manila.

He was later allowed entry into the country.

Upon returning to Australia in January, he was interviewed by AFP officers at Sydney Airport, where he allegedly confessed to making the online threat.

The man has been charged with threatening aviation security and is scheduled to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

The penalty for this offence can be up to $15,500.

AFP Sydney Airport Police Commander Davina Copelin emphasised that any threat to a flight, airline, or airport precinct is thoroughly investigated, regardless of intent.

“The AFP provides an immediate response to any threat to the airport or airlines, including investigating and apprehending those offenders responsible,” Copelin said.

“These matters are not taken lightly. Threats such as this can cause a substantial loss of resources and time for the airline, and the airport.

“It also jeopardises the safety of members of the public, airport workers and the authorities who need to investigate the incident thoroughly.”
