Cyberzone Partners with SM Cares to Power Sustainability Initiatives

Partnership expands e-waste collection and recycling initiatives across 88 SM Malls nationwide

[Manila, Philippines] – In a world driven by technology, the need to manage waste has never been greater.

In line with this, Cyberzone and SM Cares are ramping up their sustainability efforts with programs that tackle one of the fastest-growing environmental concerns: electronic waste. Through initiatives such as Trash to Cash and the installation of SM Electronic Waste (“E-Waste”) Collection Drop Boxes, the partnership aims to make e-waste disposal easier, safer, and more accessible to the public.

“We take pride in being the go-to tech destination for shoppers. But as gadgets evolve, we also see the growing problem of discarded electronics,” said Patrick Pacla, Vice President – Cyberzone Operations and Marketing at SM Supermalls. “Everyone has a role to play in sustainability, and Cyberzone is committed to doing its part – making sure that the tech that powers our lives does not end up harming the planet”.

With Trash to Cash, SM Cares’ recycling program, customers can dispose of paper, plastics, PET bottles, and other recyclables every month. They bring in their items to SM Supermalls, which are weighed and valued, then exchanged for cash.

Cyberzone, on the other hand, is expanding SM’s Electronic Waste Collection Program, placing dedicated drop boxes in 68 Cyberzone branches and 20 other SM malls for old gadgets, broken accessories, and other electronic items that require proper disposal. These bins—crafted from recycled materials—ensure that hazardous e-waste is segregated responsibly.

In 2024, Cyberzone and SM Cares partnered with PLDT Home and Smart Communications to roll out these e-waste bins nationwide, making it easier for mallgoers to responsibly discard tech products they no longer use.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Whether it’s a busted keyboard or a monitor past its prime, properly discarding electronics prevents harmful substances from entering the environment and conserves materials for reuse.

“It’s inspiring to have Cyberzone fully onboard in tackling e-waste,” said Joaquin L. San Agustin, Executive Vice President of SM Supermalls for Marketing. “With the support of partners like PLDT and Smart, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable path forward, one effort at a time”.
