New Delhi, October 29: The Peace and Harmony Commission of the Delhi Parliament on Friday summoned a representative of Facebook India and testified on November 2 about the February 2020 riots in the capital.

The Commission said in a letter that it would focus on the role of social media giants in curbing false malicious messages that could cause social incongruity. “Facebook has a large number of users at NCT in Delhi, so the committee decided to hear from a representative of Facebook India.”

The committee was formed after a riot in northeastern Delhi occurred among protesters of the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The period of turmoil coincided with former US President Donald Trump’s first trip to India. The letter further stated that various figures, including journalists, former bureaucrats, and community leaders, appeared in front of the committee and provided evidence and suggestions.

“The Commission has observed and commented that social media plays a very important role in curbing the spread of false provocative and malicious messages that can incite violence and discord. The Commission has asked Facebook India to send a competent senior representative who is familiar with the issue, but at the same time minimizes the number of representatives to social media companies due to the situation of Covid-19. I requested to limit it. “If we do not send a representative, a proceeding for breach of privilege / contempt of court will be initiated,” the letter added. More than 50 people were killed in these riots, one-third of whom belonged to the minority community. Some viral posts via social media, primarily Facebook, have added fuel to the fire.
