A firefighter present at the scene said that the plane flipped “upside down” with its fuel tank “leaking”.

They told Bolton News: “The plane is said to be upside down. Two people are seriously injured. Fuel is leaking, and there is debris around the area.”

One witness told Manchester Evening News: “The plane taxied down the runway and upon reaching the end of the runway there was a loud pop sound and the engine cut-off.

“It continued to coast at a really low altitude before the wing struck the ground on one side.

“It then rolled over completely upside down and the plane snapped into two pieces.”

A spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Police said: “Emergency services are currently responding to a plane crash at Barton Aerodrome.

“Two men have been taken to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries and another with potentially life-changing injuries.

“A scene is in place whilst emergency service workers conduct their enquiries and people are asked to avoid the area.”

It comes after another plane crashed into a UK holiday park and burst into flames – as locals reported a “shockwave” and “loud bang”.

The plane had two people on board, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary added.

One eyewitness told the Isle of Wight County Press: “I felt a shockwave, then heard a loud bang and saw lots of black smoke.”

Two people suffered minor injuries in the incident near Bembridge, according to the local fire service.

Firefighters from Newport and Ryde found the aircraft “had suffered extensive damage from the impact and subsequent fire”, said Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Services.

“All occupants had safely exited the aircraft before emergency services arrived”, it added.

Inspector Alex Dale said the plane had taken off from Bembridge Airport, turned around and then clipped a chimney before crashing near the chalets at the holiday park.

The inspector added that the plane burst into flames and bystanders rushed to pull out two people.

An ambulance plane attended and no patients were taken to hospital, Isle of Wight NHS Trust said.
