People are encouraged to celebrate Canada Day, but they are not allowed to blow things up while doing it.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) is reminding residents and visitors that consumer fireworks and sky lanterns are not permitted within City of Vernon boundaries.

“With the prolonged drought conditions we’re currently experiencing, it’s important that everyone stays vigilant and makes fire-safe choices,” said Deputy Fire Chief Brian Parsons. “We all have a role to play in helping reduce the risk of wildfires.”

There are many safe and fun alternatives to fireworks to help celebrate Canada Day, including:

  • Hosting an outdoor movie night
  • Using glow sticks or noise makers
  • Lighting battery-powered flameless candles
  • Enjoying a bylaw-compliant campfire where permitted

According to a city press release, using or storing fireworks without a permit may result in a fine of up to $300. Multiple fines can be issued for a single infraction.
