In a tragic incident in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region, a suspension bridge collapse resulted in five deaths and 24 injuries, according to Xinhua, the state-run news agency. The accident occurred at 6:18 p.m. local time on Wednesday in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, a popular sightseeing area.

Following the collapse, the scenic site has been closed to the public as authorities launch a thorough investigation. Videos validated by Reuters show the bridge tilting precariously with cables serving as handrails barely holding up. Some portions of the bridge hung over a river, adding to the perilous scene.

Images circulating on social media show several people lying injured beneath the bridge. Emergency responders were seen using makeshift stretchers to remove casualties from the scene. Xinhua reported that the central government has dispatched a task force to manage the investigation and ensure the wounded receive proper medical care.
